In the wild bees reproduce by swarming, this is a process that bees are perfectly adapted for and have used for millions of years. When you buy a package from us you are essentially buying a swarm of bees, this is the perfect way to make a start in beekeeping.
Our 3 pound packages of bees consist of approximately 12,000 bees complete with a queen. It is the ideal way in which to buy bees when starting beekeeping. There are many advantages in buying a package of bees compared to a nucleus.
For a start it is cheaper simply because you aren't buying the 5 frames and combs that come with a nuc, those all take time to assemble and you will be charged for it if you buy a nucleus.
Secondly package bees are far less likely to carry disease than nucleus bees. Many bee diseases are retained in frames, honey and combs and it is good beekeeping practice to sterilize equipment and replace combs on a regular basis. Some of the organisms that cause bee disease can be present at a low level in a seemingly healthy hive. It is practically impossible to be certain that nucleus bees are free of disease. With all the bee diseases out there why take the risk of transferring frames carrying disease into your hives.
Finally a package of bees can be transferred into any type of hive, it doesn't matter if you use a National, Commercial, Langstroth, Dadant, Smith, WBC, Warre or Top Bar hive.
